The President of Iran - HIS EXCELLENCY - Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, spoke at my dear Columbia campus today. The spectacle was quite a site. Plus, I don’t think I could have loved President Bollinger’s opening speech anymore.

It’s all better told in photos. Want the words? Head over to the “Ahmadineblog” at the Columbia Daily Spectator which I helped set up.

Oh, Dorm Life.

Bouncing off Ryan’s earlier post about living with people you hate, here’s a snap shot of the sort of room I’ll be moving into next Monday.

Hip hip hooooray!

And the strange thing is, the only thing I’m worried is how I’m going to fit my 24″ Dell monitor into the desk.

My Super Cool Roommate

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007 at 12:36 pm

Earlier this year in April, right after I was accepted to Barnard, I met up with Lindsey at the accepted students weekend there. We had a blast together, and found out that we both:

  • Don’t see the logic in keeping an ultra-neat room.
  • Enjoy performing (her: theater/Broadway, me: dance!)
  • Are certainly outgoing and love the city (NYC) and all it has to offer.

So voila! A roommate match was born. We’ve been keeping in touch during the summer (of course we planned our room theme thank you) and we’ve both been keeping busy.

With the help of her boyfriend’s father, Lindsey and Alex both work at Playbill. But… this is no ordinary desk job! I present to you: Playbill: Video. The fantastic duo does a great job reporting on a variety of theatrical events along with their friend Noah. Check out their feature on Shakespeare in the Park and all of their extremely professional features. (They’re naturals.)

Oh Oprah

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007 at 9:22 am

Oprah Winfrey told a crowd of 30,000 at Howard University’s commencement Saturday that her grandmother’s wish was for her to get “some good white folks” to work for. “I regret that she didn’t live past 1963 and see that I did get some really good white folks,” the talk show queen said, “working for me.”

I got some really goo’ black foolks’ workin’ for me too.

Uhh… not really, but can I just through the double standard out here again? How ridiculous would that statement be if I meant it? I’d be pounced on and executed!

Oh, and if you didn’t notice, Howard University is all black. It’s “affectionately known as ‘the black Harvard’” and is “the number one producer of African American Ph.D.s in the nation,” according to Wikipedia.

May Day! Celebrate Communism!

comm1.jpgHere is my (late) reflection on May day:

Celebrate Communism!
It only killed 110 million people.

Gotta love the Columbia College Republicans. I can’t wait to get over there to tear this liberal garbage apart.

So you don’t have to sift through the comments:

about all the lives capitalism has saved? What about all the years it has added to the world’s population?

Medicine? Technology? Industry? Universities?

Historians believe 9.4 and 12 million slaves arrived in the New World. Disregarding the fact that neither slavery nor mercantilism is capitalist (as capitalism requires a non zero-sum transaction), if we BUMP the number up to 20 million and considered every one of those lives “lost” or dead, that’s TWENTY MILLION FEWER than the number of lives lost in Mao’s China under the Great Leap alone.

Nobody said capitalism is perfect, but for all those who have suffered under the system, it was due to the system, not because of some government agent’s grudge or incompetence.

I don’t think it’s fair to say either Communism OR Capitalism really killed anybody. Ideologies don’t kill people — people kill people.

Psuedo Silence at MHS

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007 at 5:21 pm

As a Senior, I currently attend M. High School. Today the nation-wide event “Day of Silence” took place across high school and college campuses every where. To preface this article, I want to make it clear that I do not have qualms with gays or anything of that sort. I respect all human beings that walk this earth.

In response to this event, I had previously voiced my disagreement by creating a Facebook group here (entitled “There are more things to go silent an entire day for…”) and had all along decided to respectfully observe the day as it happened. Last night, my sister and I also decided to cut around 80 orange “remembrance” ribbons for the murder-victims of Virginia-Tech with small safety-pins to hand out to any student who wanted to wear one.

This morning, the Gay-Straight alliance club and their supporters almost gleefully took to the high school hallways with their outfits doused in black and attached pink 6×4 index cards with a folded ribbon detailing their mission. Read the rest of this entry »
